Goodreads Review: Lola and the Boy Next Door.

This was, for me, probably about a 3-3.5 star book. However, it gets bumped up to four stars on the merits of Lola/fashion, which was my personal OTP.

The love triangle felt like a gender-swapped version of Anna and the French Kiss, which was amusing but make it extra predictable. Lola was basically the definition of a hot mess throughout most of the book (albeit with good reason some of the time). The narrative failed to make Max at all believable as a serious love interest, mostly only showing him in moments of jealously or anger despite how many times Lola says to the reader that she thinks he’s the one. I didn’t fall in love with the setting the same way I did with Paris.

Plus, I started keeping count on my progress updates of all the times the writing felt like it was making an unintentional pop culture reference. Seriously, Max drives a Chevy Impala from the 60’s (Hello there, Dean from Supernatural), Lola has similar ideas about fashion expression as Weetize Bat from Francesca Lia Block’s dream-like lyrical novels of L.A. fairy-tales, Lola talking about being empty vs full for being in a relationship reminded me of a lesser version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer saying she’s still cookie dough and not ready to be with someone until she’s warm gooey cookies… [EDIT: oh, I forgot one! The more over-protective of her gay dads was named Nathan, and I just kept picturing him as Nathan Fillion playing Richard Castle. Admittedly, that wasn’t so much the text as just how my brain works, but still! It totally fits.]

But despite all this little flaws and pet-peeves and moments of distracting reference, despite taking quite a while to warm up to Cricket (largely due to having imagined something much worse than was actually the case about what happened in the past), it was still a fun and enjoyable book, and I still ended up reading it in basically one day(ish). It was also pretty cool getting to see Anna and St Clair from the outside. All three books in this series are told first person, from the POV of a teenage girl falling in love, so the Unreliable Narrator trope is pretty much a given. It makes it extra interesting to see the same characters again in the other books, because it’s a perspective we’ll never get from another book.

But Lola and fashion! Half the reason I love the Weetzie Bat books so much is the whimsical creative daring fashion choices so lovingly described throughout, and here Lola doesn’t disappoint in doing the same. It makes me long to get a sewing machine and a workspace and wigs and go to thrift shops and start CREATING. I adore the way Lola commits to expressing herself through amazing bold fashion statements, and dream about the day I can do the same. It seriously makes up for not being another love letter to Paris (sorry Paris).

Anyway, it was an enjoyable book, and I’ll be rereading it once in a while, right along with the other two. But as Roux said in the movie version of Chocolat, “It’s good…but it’s not my favorite”.

Goodreads Review: Anna and the French Kiss.

This felt really cute. That’s the feeling it leaves me with, the lingering taste in my mouth from the sweet fluffy joy at the end. But the reason I liked it isn’t just because of those final pages. I liked it because it wasn’t all light and fluff and falling in love. I remember falling in love as a teenager being huge and kind of scary and confusing and wonderful and difficult and all the things, and this book really seemed to capture the good intentions and bad choices and oblivious moments that come with being young and not having had much life experience.

Anna as narrator felt real and genuine to me. She was multi-dimensional, and she felt like an actual teenager when compared to my own experiences of the age. She fumbled and made mistakes and fell into bad choices, but she also learned from it and built amazing friendships and fell in love and gained becoming her own person. I went into this book thinking I’d just like it. Now that I’m thinking back on it, though, it feels like something I’ll be returning to in the future.

Also, as a side note: the descriptions of Paris REALLY make me want to go there. Like, so badly.

Goodreads Review: Openly Straight.

I went into reading it wanting to like this book. I really, truly, wanted to like it. I’m giving it three stars because it’s actually a pretty good book, personal feelings about Rafe aside. But it’s PAINFULLY obvious it’s a YA book sometimes. I say this as someone who loves the YA genre to bits and is reading mostly that and fanfic these days. There are some completely fabulous YA books out there.

This is still above average in a lot of ways, but in other ways it’s smack in the middle ground, and most of those ways are Rafe. Our narrator of this interesting-concept story would be a lot more interesting to me personally if I wasn’t spending pretty much the first two-thirds of the book alternating between cringing with second-hand embarrassment and just wanting to straight-up smack some sense into the kid. And yes, I understand that that’s part of his journey, but it’s one of the things that just annoys the hell out of me. The idea of the story is interesting, the setting could be fun to explore, but I really didn’t connect to any of the characters, and Rafe is just so self-absorbed and does some really stupid things.

It sounds like I hated the book — which I didn’t, really — and for someone else this could definitely be a great book. I’m clearly not a target audience. I wanted it to be as original as Simon Vs or Fan Art, and it wasn’t. Rafe isn’t Simon or Jamie. And yeah, Simon and Jamie both have cringe-worthy moments, but I still connected to them and to the worlds through their eyes more than I did Rafe and his world. It’s inevitable to compare those books, despite them being set in very different situations, because at the heart they’re actually all just a queer boy figuring out his sexuality and identity and love while surrounded by High School drama and friendships and families and everything else.

Rafe comes at all of this from the opposite direction of the other two, and I wanted that to be something unique and interesting to explore, but in the end it felt flat. I had a couple moments in the last quarter of the book where it started connecting on an emotional level, but it was too little too late for me. Hopefully not for someone else, but I personally needed more out of it, and it just never quite lived up to that potential. Even the ending felt unsatisfying, despite a few nice bits in the wrapping-up part. I wanted more out of it, so I ended up disappointed. Which, now that I think about it, is kind of appropriate in a meta sort of way.

Goodreads Review: Fan Art.

If you like flail-worthy queer fluff about adorable boys who need to just get a clue and/or take a chance, throughout most of a strangely-hard-to-put-down book, this is the story for you! So, basically, in the same category as Simon Vs…

There’s a lot to love about this book. I literally spent the entire last ten pages in a state of constant fangirling flail and squee, for example. Jamie is easy to like and is mostly intelligent (always a nice trait in YA protagonists). I like that he’s out to his family but not to his school or friends, because that’s a little different than a lot of set-ups in this genre. Mason is compelling as his best friend/secret crush, and the high school has some pretty interesting kids and clubs. It was a quick read, and definitely felt like fluff, but was very engaging and compelling fluff with real heart and dealing with real issues. It didn’t feel meaningless at all, and I ended it feeling both satisfied and wanting to read it again (and also interested in reading more and/or fanfic about them).

The only things that kinda pulled me out of the story a couple times were:
1) It takes place in Idaho, my old homestate where I grew up, and reading names of places I know in fiction tends to throw me a little and make me more critical about descriptions of places.
2) Certain slang that’s incredibly common in certain online circles gets used a lot at various points, which I pretty much loved except for the times when it felt like it was being used slightly…off. Like, saying “slash them together” instead of “shipping them” or “slash-shipping them”. Like, it’s almost right and I understand why it’s being used that way, but it’s not the way I tend to see it used these days, so it felt…off. It’s not a huge thing, and it’s entirely acceptable in context, but it feels…not quite right.

Regardless of these two minor issues, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to pretty much everyone. Well, everyone who doesn’t hate cute queer YA, anyway!

Goodreads Review: Ecotopia Emerging.

This book has flaws and faults, sure, and it’s definitely a produce of the era it was written, but the message at the heart of it is still incredibly relevant.

Let’s talk about the two most obvious issues first:
1) The prose is certainly not narrative-friendly. I could probably only name a few of the many people mentioned and give defining details about even less. The writing is dense and information-packed; it talks about science and politics and situations, and the people are simply another tool with which to convey those subjects.
2) The entire premise and resolve are idealistic and unrealistic in present times. It’s obvious to a modern reader why things would never happen the way they do in the book, but when the book was written we hadn’t yet had quite so many real-life examples of just how far the government and armed forces, much less the large corporations, are willing to go to maintain control of a domestic situation.

The first issue is one that I run into to varying degrees with certain types of books from that era. It’s a problem for some readers, but for others it’s not as much of an issue. It’s a matter of personal taste, really. I don’t mind so much; sometimes I’m in the mood for it, and sometimes I’m not and take a break from it. It’s easy to do with a book like this, especially with Ecotopia Emerging, where the author is exploring how something like Ecotopia might happen rather than a story about individual people. There are individual peoples’ stories contained within, but the book itself is a story about Ecotopia’s birth as a whole, and the people are simply a narrative device to that end.

The second issue isn’t really an issue if one simply remembers when the book was written and thinks of it in terms of historical perspective and an exploration of optimism and ideology.

Now on to the heart of the book:
The country hasn’t exactly gone the route predicted as our future in Ecotopia Emerging, but in some ways it feels like we’ve just managed to get there by a more insidious and less visible route. The problems the book talks about are still problems; we’re still not a sustainable, healthy, environmentally responsible, harmful-chemical-free nation. Even when I was a little kid, I felt pretty bleak thinking about the long-term future, because it seemed like everything was heading in a pretty bad direction. I still wish we could take ideas presented in books like this and turn some of them into reality (and some of the other ideas we’ve already discovered/invented new and better options that sadly aren’t always being used yet, either).
I enjoy reading books like this because they remind me that I’m not alone in thinking there’s a better way to run things, and that lots of people have had lots of good ideas and explored them in fiction. Remembering that can help me hope that someday they won’t just be fiction anymore, even if it hasn’t happened yet.

Ecotopia Emerging isn’t ground-breaking or riveting. It’s not an impressive or defining work of fiction. It’s not even an example of particularly good writing. But none of that is terribly important compared to the ideas and hope it contains. Yes, it can come off as preachy or agenda-pushing, but it’s an agenda that, with translation into current times, would actually make the world pretty damn awesome, so I don’t exactly have a problem with that. If you can get past the issues of the writing and the society in which it was written, at the center of it is a dream that I hope we can all share some day, where true sustainability and a healthy environment are more important than business and wealth for the few at the expense of the many and of the future of everyone.

Blame @melbsonmymind : the Hamilton Book Tag.

Dear Cyber-Friends,

Today’s post is going to be a little different from my usual. To see why, you can watch this video where Kirsti tagged me. Basically, Hamilton is this amazing groundbreaking incredible new thing created by Lin-Manuel Miranda that contains some of the best music ever and happens to get people obsessing about the Founding Fathers of America while it not-so-slowly takes over your every waking thought. Or maybe that’s just me (and most of my twitter friends, and, like, half the internet.). ANYWAY, because Hamilton love is spreading so quickly around the world/internet, this book tag was created in which songs from Hamilton are used as book-related questions to be answered by the tagee.

At first this was hard because I was struggling to think of answers for some of these. As I wrote the post, however, it started getting really hard because I kept thinking of more and more and MORE answers to each question, and it was really hard not to just include ALL THE THINGS and have about half a dozen books/series for answer. Which is to say, all answers are subject to further extrapolation and additions, and if you want to talk about EVEN MORE BOOKS I LOVE, just let me know in the comments.

Now, on to the post! …after one last quick disclaimer: Since I am talking about books in this post, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. I pretty much stay away from anything huge, but if you haven’t read Code Name Verity, The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Good Omens, or The Sandman comics, you might want to do that before you continue. Don’t worry, I’ll wait for you.

Okay, all done? Ready to continue? Here we go:

Question One:

In the Room Where It Happens:

A book world you would put yourself in.

Really, I would chose any era of this world. The Custard Protocol by Gail Carriger just happens to be the newest installment, but if I were in The Finishing School or The Parasol Protectorate eras, I wouldn’t exactly complain about it. These books are the prefect blend of steampunk meets paranormal meets adventure comedy meets self-rescuing women, and they’re basically one of my favorite things ever.

Question Two:

The Schuyler Sisters:

Underrated Female Character.

I gave this question a lot of thought. My first answer was one of my favorite female characters from when I was a kid:

Eowyn from The Two Towers and Return of the King by JRR Tolkien is not only underrated by pretty much everyone around her, but she also — in my opinion — has her strength and power pretty undercut by the retelling of the story as done by the movies. But then after thinking about my answers a while longer, I thought of another book from my childhood with TWO female characters so underrated they get turned into ONE CHARACTER in the movie adaptation (plus another female that gets turned into a male for the movie)…

The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith features Pongo and Missis, and after Missis has the original fifteen puppies, the Dearlys adopt a canine wet nurse they name Perdita to help Missis feed all the babies. Perdita has her own entire backstory of forbidden love and lost puppies before she got found and adopted by the Dearlys, too. When the puppies are stolen, Pongo and Missis go to rescue them while Perdita stays behind with the Dearlys to try and comfort them. When they find the puppies, Perdita’s are with the others they rescue, and in the end, her forbidden love and father of her puppies gets reunited and adopted too, becoming the 101st Dalmatian.

Also, the tabby cat in the book is female.

Question Three:

My Shot:

A character that goes after what they want and doesn’t let anything stop them.

This is another one I gave a lot of thought. I was thinking about answering it with this…

…because Manon Blackbeak from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas is kind of ALL THE THINGS (even though I haven’t yet read the newest book and that makes me really sad). But, I’ve recently gotten on a Self-Rescuing Princess kick, and there’s a certain Princess of that genre who influenced my childhood a lot and she also totally fits the requirements for an answer to this question.

Princess Cimorene of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede bullies her tutors into teaching her useful lessons like swordplay and languages, runs away from home instead of marrying someone she doesn’t like, argues with a bunch of dragons until they finally agree to let her live, cleans and cooks and investigates, teaches herself more skills, does spells, makes friends, defeats the princes who try to rescue her, saves the day, and all that’s just in the first book. She goes on to rescue her dragon from kidnapping, and then on a quest to save her husband’s kingdom while pregnant. Clearly, she’s not about to waste her shot.

Question Four:

Stay Alive:

A character you wish was still alive.

There are so many answers I could give to this question, but there’s one that popped up first and stuck there, without a second thought.

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. “Kiss me, Hardy” is a phrase that will make me start sobbing inside, because of this book. This book is also going to be showing up as the answer to two more questions, because it messed me up that bad when I read it. In a good way. In a sobbing heartbroken mess kind of good way.

That’s all I’m going to say about it now, because even with the spoiler warning at the beginning, I’m super reluctant to talk about this book in detail. Either you already know so you understand, or you don’t and I can’t explain it. Sorry. Just read it. You’ll see.

Question Five:


The most heartbreaking end to a relationship you’ve ever read.

It should come as no surprise to those who’ve read Code Name Verity and understand my reaction that I’m choosing it again as my answer here. I don’t care if it’s cheating. It broke my heart and make me sob for a day, therefore it totally counts.

Also, I’m slightly taking advantage of the fact that relationship =/= traditional sexual. It can also mean friendship, family, asexual, and so on. #PSA

Question Six:

You’ll Be Back:

Sassiest villain.

This was one of the hardest questions for me to find an answer. Mostly because I kept wanting to say King George from Hamilton. When I finally managed to make myself think of something else, I decided on this person:

Desire of the Endless, from the Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman. Desire isn’t as much of the “ha-ha” kind of sassy, but he/she/it tends to always answer serious questions with a smirk and a dismissive wave, which should count for a lot in such a dark narrative. If you’ve read the last issues, then you also know that Desire acts as quite the undercover super-villain throughout the story, too.

And yes, I’m totally counting this series as a book. Epic storytelling is epic storytelling, regardless of format. This format happens to be words printed with ink on paper. That means it’s a book. (#PSA2)

Question Seven:

The Reynolds Pamphlet:

A book with a twist you didn’t see coming.

I’m sorry, were you expecting something else? The moment the second part of this book started, it was unexpected twist after unexpected twist, right down to the sobbing mess I became by the end. It’s a brilliant use of one of my favorite tropes: The Unreliable Narrator.

Question Eight:


A series you marathoned.

Since “obsessive marathon” is my usual reading style, this was a hard one to answer simply because I have so many from which I could choose. I finally decided on this.

If I have to go with only one of the many non-stop reads Tamora Pierce creates, I pick the Lioness Quartet. Not only did it kick off her writing about girls and women who don’t conform to fantasy genre tropes, but it was also originally meant to be one book and got split into four.

The stories set in Tortall and those in Emelan should be read by every kid and adult, and ought to be classics on the same level as Narnia. The world-building and systems of magic are incredible, especially in Emelan, and the characters feel like they’re your best friends. The life lesson, ethics, and moral issues in the adventures are all tackled with compassion and care and a kind of idealized realism, with the combined result of it never feeling like you’re being preached at, but instead truly feel for the struggles these kids go through as they learn and grow.

Plus, since they’re written to be accessible for younger readers, I’ve sometimes almost made it through an entire quartet in one go. Talk about marathoning!

(Honorable mention in this category goes to The Dark Is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper. I read those in the exact same MUST DEVOUR ALL THE BOOKS NOW  fashion no matter how many times I’ve read them.)

Question Nine:


Favorite book with multiple POVs.

I honestly just realized that there’s actually two ways to interpret this question, and I’d gotten stuck on one. So, in a last-minute change of plan, I’m going to answer this question twice, one for each way. I’d been thinking about it a lot, because I’d been thinking of it in a “best use of multi-POVs” kind of way, rather than a “personal favorite that happens to have multi-POVs” kind of way.

My flippant answer to this question, by the way, is to say “mine”, because I happen to be writing a series that uses multiple POVs as unreliable narrators, which is kind of amazingly fun and challenging. I was also tempted to say Code Name Verity again, because that’s how badly that book mess me up (in a good sobbing mess way).

HOWEVER. Here’s my real and final answer(s):

“Best Use” award goes to:

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. The chapters switch between POVs and each time it adds to the story and makes you question what assumptions came before it from the other characters. There was at least one time where new information made me want to start from the beginning again because of how much I felt like I missed from not knowing something about someone. THAT is a brilliant use of multiple POVs, and something I aspire to in my own fiction writing.

“Personal Favorite” award goes to:

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. A classic, as far as I’m concerned, and also a rather brilliant use of multiple-POVs as a vehicle in which to build the comedy, what with the whole switched-at-birth plot-line and the mistaken-identities tropes abounding throughout the narrative.

Question Ten:

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story:

A book/series you feel like will be remembered throughout history.

There’s a really obvious answer to this one, which is Harry Potter. And while that is good and true, I like to try and think of less obvious answers, so I decided to go with this series instead:

The books of the Discworld by Terry Pratchett are certainly going to live on in my heart forever, and I think a lot of people are going to be passing that love on to generations to come. That’s my hope, anyway.

Question One:



A ship you were pulling for from the start.

Zuzana and Mik, from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor. I’m picking them mostly because they compliment each other, and because I’m in love with Zuz. Also, they have such a lovely relationship, from the cute slightly inept fumblings at crushing on each other, to the kick-ass supportive teamwork when they have going on through one crazy adventure after terrifying revelation after another. There’s other couples I totally ship in other books and series too, don’t get me wrong. But Zuz and Mik are so awesome, both together and apart, and they just work so well as a couple without nearly as many problematic issues as other fictional couples, that I think they deserve to win this one. I was cheering them from the get-go.

(Runner up: Scarlet and Wolf from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. They pretty much define the kind of characters I will over-relate to and get over-invested in their ship. Also Simon and Blue from Simon vs The Homo Sapients Agenda by Becky Albertalli because they are ridiculously adorably. Also a lot of others because I have shipper problems.)

Favorite Fight Scene.

Every time Granny Weatherwax uses Headology to save the day. (Discworld novels, Terry Pratchett, etc)

Question Three:

Say No To This:

Guilty Pleasure read.

There’s not a lot of books I’d classify as Guilty Pleasures, because I don’t feel the slightest bit of shame over reading good books regardless of genre, etc. If I do feel embarrassed about having read something, it’s usually because it’s such awful writing that I’d rather not have anything to do with it, and therefore felt no pleasure in reading it in the first place. That said, there are still books I’ve read and will occasionally reread for a bit of light fun, that aren’t exactly mind-blowing stories or great writing. But they’re still engaging writing, so I still enjoy them, and I figure it’s close enough to an answer for this question.

Having basically no relation to the TV adaptations, the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris is totally light and silly paranormal reading, and happen to be the first books I thought of as an answer. I read the first one years ago, after someone showed me the pilot episode and I found out it was taken from a novel. It was a complete tonal opposite, and since I like a lot of books that would fall under the horribly sexist and dismissive category of “chick-lit” I figured it’d be fun to read more. Every once in a while when I’m in the right mood and need a distraction while stressed out, I’ll pick them up again.

(Random fact: my initial runner-up for this is the X-Wing series by Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Allston. They’re the only Star Wars books I hung on to after my teens. The first time I read them was the week I had chicken-pox, and they kept me from getting scars because I was too busy reading to notice the itching as much.)

What Comes Next:

A series you wish had more books.

I have two answers for this. Can I have two answers for this? I don’t care, I’m going to do it anyway. No bending the rules or making up justifications like before. There’s just flat out two answers to this question.


Little Brother and Homeland, two novels by Cory Doctorow, are currently a book and a sequel. I’m hoping it’ll become a series. They’re excellent commentary on modern society and issues, while also being lessons and tutorials on personal security with technology, masquerading as a barely-alternate version of current events at the time they were each written, all geared towards a teenage reader. I’ve written a review of at least one of them on one of my blogs. If you want to read it and don’t want to look for it yourself, just let me know and I’ll find it and link you.


As far as I know, The Gammage Cup and The Whisper of Glocken by Carol Kendall are in the same boat of being a series of two, except this time there’s no possibility of more, which makes me sad. This are charming books of a “grounded-fantasy” variety, that my sister read to me when I was little. They have a special place in my heart.

Right Hand Man:

Favorite BrOTP.

I mean, is there really a better BrOTP to read about than that of Colon and Nobby? I doubt it. Although I’d accept Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg as an alternate. (Discworld series, Terry Pratchett, etc.)

What’d I Miss:

A book or series you were late to reading.

There are actually quite of few ways of answering this, and quite a few I could pick from each one, but I’m going with one that feels pretty significant in pretty much all the ways.

I read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee for the first time a couple years ago, in my mid-twenties. I did see a play of it as a kid, but I was really young and didn’t know the story so I didn’t pay much attention to it. I figure that doesn’t really count. When I read it recently, it certainly felt like the first time hearing the story. Plus, I finally get what everyone was talking about now!

Okay, that’s the end of the list, and also the end of my brain power for the day. Seriously, I’ve been working on this post for almost the entire day, and that’s not even counting the weeks I spend tweaking the original list I wrote on paper. And I could keep tweaking at this, but then it’d never get published, sooo…..

Talking about: @shipitmovie and fandom.

Dear Cyber-Friends,

Today I want to talk about a script I just read. Let’s back up just a bit first before I get into it, though.

If you’ve read my blog for a while, you’ll have seen posts about various fandoms, how canon treats fan ships, queerness, sexuality and gender, etc. I’ve even talked about how fanfic is so very important, and why. I might not always be the most eloquent on a subject, but it’s probably pretty clear that these things are important to me, that I’m passionate about them, and that I like to gently educate and explain them to others.

I haven’t been doing that lately, though. Lately, I’ve either not been blogging at all, or I’ve been blogging about my travels — which, fair enough, that’s what I started this blog for in the first place. Hence the name, and all. Blogging about my travels is fun, and it’s a good way to share parts of my non-cyber life with everyone, but I’m realizing how much I miss the other kinds of blogging I do. I miss geeking out about stuff that excites me, and I miss talking through a subject to myself in an attempt to make it accessible and interesting and informative to all of you. I’m going to try to do that kind of blogging more often; we’ll see if that actually happens.

It’s going to happen today at least, though. Like I say, I just read this script that I want to talk about to everyone. It’s called Ship It, and it’s written by an amazing person called Britta Lundin, a filmmaker and writer based in L.A. I’ve been following Britta on Twitter for a while now, not knowing any of this.

I followed Britta at first because I was following anyone who had interesting or feelsy things to say about Destiel and the Destiel corner of the Supernatural fandom. I’ve mentioned the Destiel fandom before on my blog; it’s the shipping of Dean and Cas, and it’s what made me start watching Supernatural in the first place. I heard and found so much that was so compelling about it online, that it made me curious about the canon (the actual show).

Even before that, back in the days of angsty teenhood with dial-up internet in Backwoods, North Idaho, I was emotionally invested in fanfic and shipping. At that time it mostly revolved around Harry Potter fics, from what I can remember. Oh, and Lord of the Rings, whose corners of fandom were my first real interactions and friendships with other fans. There were a few others, but that’s what I remember most: going through pages and pages of HP on fanfic sites, even writing some myself, and late night chat rooms with LotR fans who shared their fics with me.

I’d stopping being around fandom for years since then, but then I had a conversation with my cousin about Supernatural (she was watching it, and telling me about it), and then I started looking it up, and I found rediscovering the wonderful things that exist down that particular internet rabbit hole. Not just Supernatural, either, of course. There’s numerous fandoms and ships out there, something for everyone, and it’s that the point? The magic of fandom is that we don’t have to stick to canon; we can create new things that speak to us using an already establish language, if you will. We all know the origin, so we can take each other on journeys into unexplored territories or deeper into familiar ground. But I digress, and I’ve also talked about all this before.

The point is, it was the fandom and a slash ship that seemingly only exists in canon as queerbaiting that got me to start watching a show. It doesn’t really matter what show that was, because it’s a formula that’s repeated over and over on TV right now, and has been for years.

See, this whole queerbaiting-the-fandom-to-create-interest-without-committing-to-queerness thing is just plain wrong. Yes, it does get people to watch and keep watching the show. But then they stop watching it after a while. They get sick of being yanked around by the creators, actors, or show itself. They get sick of being bullied by the other kind of fans, the mean and entitled ones. They find shows with real actual representation instead, which is what they were looking for in the first place. But they keep the friendships, in the end. They keep the parts they love, which are usually all fandom-based, and ditch the bits that just hurt them over and over, which is usual the canon (and the fans who are actually bullies more than fans).

Enter this script I keep mentioned, for a movie trying to get made, called Ship It.

Ship It is about a teenage girl from a small town, a huge fan of a first-season CW show and a fanfic slash writer. She doesn’t have friends because she doesn’t have common ground or interests with the other more “typical” kids around. But online, she’s hugely popular because she writes really good fic. Raise your hand if you can already relate to her… *raises my own hand*.

She goes to a convention for her favorite show, and as the last person to ask a question, she asks the one all slash-shippers want to know the answer to: will the two super-hot leads with explosive on-screen chemistry and compelling story arcs finally kiss already? The answer gets badly fumbled, which instantly leads to bad PR online because, well, online fandom is everything these days. This is a first-season show, after all, and they’re trying to get renewed. They can’t afford their fandom’s wrath or scorn.

This leads to her getting invited along the rest of the con tour to help with their online PR, despite the fact that the show creator doesn’t want her there and one of the lead actors is dismissive of both her and the rest of the fan base. Events transpire from there, including a budding relationship for our heroine with another fan and fanartist of the show.

What unfolds is a relatively simple plot with a deeply resonant and compelling emotional journey for not only our heroine, but also the resistant lead actor. It’s a tale of self-discovery with gentle and not-so-gentle help from others. It touches on a lot of issues, both lightly and more in-depth, with the care and understanding of someone who is actually part of that world and who gets it, because of course, that’s exactly what’s happening. It’s truly a movie about fandom, by someone actually in fandom, and it’s a movie for everyone, not just fans. It’s about people.

Because that’s what fandom is: it’s people. People who are passionate, people who are creative, people who share common loves and dreams and hopes and joys. People who are inspired by something, and who inspire others in return. It’s a vast and wondrous thing, when we let it. It can also be vicious and mean and awful, because people can be like that sometimes, when we get focused on the bad, on the fears, on the power-trips. But the differences and the common ground can both be cause for growth. It can inspire us to be better, do better, act better. It can teach us compassion, and can open our minds to the realities of other people. It can spark a creative spirit onto new and exciting heights. It can imagine a way to make the world better.

And yes, I may have gotten a little off-topic there, but that’s kind of my point. There’s so much potential in every form of media we consume, that there’s no way all of it can be explored by one person or even a team of people. When something we create gets shared with the world, it becomes exponentially bigger, with each possible path being explored leading to another maze of paths and even more potential. The explosive creative energy fandom generates is because people are all storytellers in our own ways, and we latch on to the things we feel passionate about.

Ship It makes me feel passionate. It does because I hear it speaking to me when I read it. It’s a story that badly needs to be out there, to get hear, to inspire others. It’s a story of what might be possible, in some way, some how. It’s a story of the hope in many fans’ hearts, that someday, someone with the power to make a difference will actually listen to us as we explain over and over how to do it better. It’s a story of fan’s journey, and an actor’s journey, but really it’s the story of fandom itself, as it evolves into the amazing and beautiful creative thing I love so much. It’s a personal story, speaking straight to each and every one of us.

Oh, and there’s lots of slash. And non-binary representation, which, if you know me at all, you know I fucking adore that.
